Learning how to cope with the emotional and social consequences of living with chronic pain is one of the most important aspects of the Functional Restoration Program. Often, our patients arrive with significant levels of depression and frustration. Our daily classes include cognitive-behavioral techniques for coping with pain, effective strategies for communicating with family, ways to manage the stressors that often exacerbate pain, and the development of individualized multimodal plans for both preventing and managing acute flare-ups of pain. One of the most unusual aspects of the program is our Art Therapy component. This nonverbal process is highly effective in helping our participants find a path out of despair and hopelessness. |
